This is a glossary of words, terms, software and websites that frequently come up when discussing blogs and podcasting and other technologies in the classroom. Clicking on the word will link to either a more comprehensive Wikipedia entry or its own website.

- software that allows you to create your own original music
- a freeware program that is used to record and edit audio. Remember, you will need to download the program and the LAME MP3 encoder.
- is short for “web log”. It is a web page where people can write and share information. Often blogs are about specific subjects. Edublogs (edublogs.org) is a free service that allows users to set up their own blogs. Blogs by their nature are subscibeble which means that users can subscribe or receive notification when new posts, content or podcasts are added. Blogging is the verb, or the act of posting information to a blog.
- a blog provider for educators and students.
- a freeware program that allows a blog owner to manage their RSS feeds and track the subscriptions to their blogs or podcasts.
- Free calendars that can be embedded into blogs and websites.
- They call it a project, but it’s really free screencasting software. Scroll down for information about screencasting.
- a freeware program that automatically adjusts the volume of WAV audio files. It does a combination of sound compresion and normalization. The advantage of it is that your listeners are not having to adjust the volume of your podcast as they are listening to it. It is available for download at http://the-levelator.en.softonic.com/
- is a digital audio encoding format. It is the format that we use to save our podcasts. iTunes converts MP3 into their own MP4 format.
- Netcaster is designed to facilitate the posting and sharing of digital media such as podcasts, videos, music, slideshows and photos. Limit sharing to only within the Ottawa Carleton District School Board network or open it up to the public.
- A format for viewing documents.
- is a collection of media files available on the internet. We use podcasts to refer to audio files. Podcasts are like radio shows with the difference that they are subscribable and available anytime on the internet. Portable Radio is our example of a student produced podcast.
- a podcaster who gradually or suddently stops podcasting.
- “Prelinger Archives was founded in 1983 by Rick Prelinger in New York City. Over the next twenty years, it grew into a collection of over 60,000 “ephemeral” (advertising, educational, industrial, and amateur) films.”
- RSS stands for “Really Simple Syndication”. It is a web based format that allows material on the internet to be subscribable. RSS feeds allow you to subscribe to blogs, podcasts or news sites and new information on these sites are automatically downloaded a format that you have selected. Feedburner is freeware software that takes all of the coding work out of getting an RSS feed set up.
- “A screencast is a digital recording of computer screen output, also known as a video screen capture, often containing audio narration.” (Wikipedia)
- is free software that allows users to make free phone calls over the internet to other Skype users. Skype also allows for text messaging, video conferencing and file transfer. It is available for download at http://www.skype.com
- free software that allows users to convert audio files from one format to another. It is available for download at http://www.nch.com.au/switch/
- is short for Waveform. It is an audio format used for storing audio files on a PC.
- is a blog publishing system. It is the program that is used by Edublogs and many other blog providers.
- is a free online file conversion program. It works without needing to download software to your computer. It does take time so be patient. Click on the name for a link to the Zamzar site.
